Joe Tomlinson joined MK Dons on 1 September 2023 from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee. A versatile left-sided player capable of playing at full-back or further forward, he arrived after two loan spells with Swindon Town, where he had impressed in League Two.

Tomlinson made an immediate impact in his first season at MK Dons. During 2023–24, he became an important attacking outlet from the left, making 39 appearances and scoring 7 goals. His contribution included goals from open play and set-piece situations, and he quickly established himself as one of the team's more productive defenders.

His second campaign, 2024–25, saw him remain a regular. He made 43 appearances, scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists.

In 2025–26, Tomlinson's playing time was reduced, but he still contributed 2 goals in 26 appearances as MK Dons secured promotion from League Two. His two goals that season included strikes in cup competition.
