Alex Gilbey joined MK Dons from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2017 and quickly established himself as an influential midfielder. Despite the Dons’ relegation from League One in his first season, Gilbey remained a key player and played a major role in the club’s immediate promotion push.
Under Paul Tisdale, he was an important part of the 2018/19 side that finished third in League Two and secured promotion back to League One. Gilbey made 39 appearances that season, scoring three goals and providing seven assists.
Back in League One in 2019/20, Gilbey produced his most prolific campaign of the spell, scoring five goals in 30 appearances. He left for Charlton Athletic in 2020
Alex Gilbey returned to MK Dons in the summer of 2023, rejoining the club after spells with Wigan Athletic and Charlton Athletic. He immediately re-established himself as a key player, captaining the side and producing the best goalscoring season of his career with 14 goals in all competitions in 2023/24. He was named MK Dons Player of the Year for a third time.
Gilbey continued to be an influential figure in midfield during 2024/25, signing a new contract and earning the League Two Player of the Month award for November. Following Dean Lewington's retirement, he was appointed club captain for the 2025/26 campaign.
As captain, Gilbey played a starring role in the Dons' promotion season, making 44 league appearances and scoring 12 goals.
