Russell Martin joined MK Dons on 15 January 2019 from Walsall, arriving as an experienced defender and Scotland international.

The veteran centre-back quickly became an important figure in Paul Tisdale’s side. Martin made 18 league appearances and scored once as the Dons finished third in League Two and secured promotion back to League One on the final day of the 2018/19 season.

Martin remained at Stadium MK for the start of the following campaign, making a further 11 league appearances and scoring once. His leadership and experience proved particularly valuable to a young squad.

His playing career at MK Dons then took an unusual turn. Following Tisdale’s departure in November 2019, Martin was appointed MK Dons manager, combining the final months of his playing career with his first steps into management. He subsequently retired as a player to concentrate fully on the job.

In total, Martin made 29 league appearances and scored two goals for MK Dons as a player.
