Paul Warne was appointed MK Dons head coach in April 2025, arriving at Stadium MK with an impressive reputation built during successful spells with Rotherham United and Derby County. He had already achieved four promotions from League One and won the EFL Trophy with Rotherham in 2022.

Warne inherited an MK Dons side that had struggled during the 2024–25 campaign, taking charge for the final four matches of the season. Although the Dons finished 19th in League Two, Warne immediately set about rebuilding the squad and establishing his own culture and playing style.

The 2025–26 season proved to be a remarkable turnaround. Warne guided MK Dons to promotion from League Two, securing the club's return to League One with a 3–0 victory over Tranmere Rovers in April 2026. The achievement represented the fifth promotion of Warne's managerial career.
