Mark Jackson was appointed MK Dons head coach on 23 December 2022, replacing Liam Manning after leaving his role as a first-team coach at Leeds United. Having previously managed Leeds United's Under-23s and Under-18s, Jackson arrived with a reputation for developing young players and favouring a possession-based style of football.

Jackson inherited an MK Dons side sitting 22nd in League One and immediately faced the difficult task of avoiding relegation. His team produced a brief revival, including three consecutive 1–0 victories over Cambridge United, Accrington Stanley and Morecambe, which lifted the Dons away from the relegation places.

However, results ultimately proved insufficient. Jackson recorded six wins, nine draws and ten defeats in 25 matches, and MK Dons were relegated to League Two after a final-day 0–0 draw at Burton Albion. Jackson was dismissed on 9 May 2023, ending a spell of just under five months in charge.
