Liam Manning was appointed MK Dons head coach in August 2021, succeeding Russell Martin and becoming the club’s first-ever head coach. Having previously worked with Ipswich Town, West Ham United, New York City FC and Belgian side Lommel SK, Manning arrived with a reputation for developing young players and promoting an attractive, possession-based style of football.

His first season at Stadium MK proved hugely successful. Manning guided the Dons to third place in League One with 89 points, narrowly missing automatic promotion by a single point. His side reached the play-off semi-finals but were beaten 2–1 on aggregate by Wycombe Wanderers. Manning was also named League One Manager of the Month for September 2021 and January 2022.

The following campaign was considerably more difficult. MK Dons struggled for results and found themselves in the relegation zone, with just 15 points from their opening 20 league matches. Manning was dismissed on 11 December 2022, ending a 16-month spell in charge in which he recorded 41 wins from 83 matches across all competitions.
